This season, I was totally inspired by the overwhelming response to my post about white geraniums, and the enthusiasm you all shared has motivated me to embrace white as the core color scheme for my garden again this year. So you convinced me, all white again!
As is the case with gardens and plants and trees that grow, you have to adapt to what nature gives you, in my case a lot less sunshine than what I had when I planted the white geraniums. Geraniums love sunshine and even as I did plant them that year, they would have done better with more sun.
Adapting a New Color Palette
With this year’s garden transformation, I chose to adapt rather than resist. Shifting my focus, I decided to experiment with plants that could bring a similar charm yet thrive in my current conditions. My feature container plants now include (almost) white dragon wing begonias. These aren’t purely chalk white but instead carry a creamy hue—an enchanting contrast to the deep greens of the hedges and the Japanese lilac trees. Dragon wing begonias are versatile, flourishing in both shade and sun. While it’s still the cool end of May, I’m excited to see them fill out and mature as the soil warms and summer unfolds.
Container Design Choices
Container planting offers incredible flexibility for creativity. Over the past several years, I’ve used palm plants to add height to my planters, but this year marks a return to cream-variegated leafed canna lilies. Their striped leaves echo the cream tones of the begonias, creating a cohesive and harmonious aesthetic in the garden. Whether the pairing turns out as stunning as I envision—only time will tell.
The Revival of Impatiens
Impatiens are another plant I’ve reintroduced this season. Years ago, when we had expansive property with numerous gardens, impatiens was a staple. I used to purchase them in bulk, planting what felt like millions along the borders of garden beds. Back then, these hardy flowers reached heights up to 24 inches, their vibrant colors a joy to behold. Now, I’m adjusting my expectations, as today’s impatiens are bred to reach a modest 12-15 inches. I’ve chosen a pure white variety, hoping they will fill out the two largest containers, adding that perfect splash of pristine white.
Embracing Full Sun
While most of my garden enjoys a mix of shade and dappled light now, one small border area still basks in full sunshine. This spot has been awarded its own centerpiece container of ornamental grass. Positioned near the door, the grass should add a dynamic element to the garden. Its slender stalks will grow fluffy plumes, which will sway gracefully with the summer breezes, creating a soothing and natural rhythm.
A Thank You to the Community
This year’s garden is more than the usual spring planting for me; it’s a reflection of shared ideas, inspiration, and encouragement. Your enthusiasm for white geraniums has ignited a spark that led me to repeat this light palette again this season. As I continue to adapt and experiment, I’ll share updates on how the garden evolves. Whether the begonias flourish, the impatiens fills in, or the ornamental grass sways in the breeze, each detail will contribute to the beauty of this year’s design.
Stay tuned and thank you for the inspiration!
With planting now complete, the waiting game begins. Gardening teaches us patience—watching over seedlings, nurturing the soil, and anticipating the vibrancy promised by the season. I find joy in envisioning the transformations that lie ahead, imagining how each plant will thrive and how the combination of whites and creams will bring my garden to life.
