It took longer than usual this season, but we finally made it down to the Suncoast! When we stepped off the plane, the air was a balmy 80°F, quite a contrast to the puffy coat I’d been bundled in when we left Toronto. That coat was quickly tucked away, though I’m under no illusion that it won’t be needed again for our return trip in April. Spring warmth in Toronto is always a gamble.

I arrived dreaming of sunshine, sandals, and long warm days… but Florida had other plans. This week has been all about brisk north winds sweeping down the coast. No snow, of course, but the kind of sharp, persistent chill that makes early‑morning golf feel like an extreme sport. And if the locals are right, February is shaping up to be a blustery one.

There is a silver lining: the Florida fashion rulebook clearly states that any temperture under 60°F calls for boots. So out they come, paired with my newly acquired straight‑leg jeans (this year’s trend, and I’m fully on board).

I had pictured myself cooking all the warm‑weather favorites, shrimp, scallops, grilled or blackened fish. Instead, the cold snap has me simmering chicken soup, searing steaks, and ladling out hearty stews. All comforting, all delicious, and all recipes I’ve made right here on the Suncoast.

March is looking far more promising for both sunshine and summery meals. Until then, I’ve gathered a few of my recent dishes below. Whether you’re braving winter up north or riding out a chilly spell here in the south, these recipes will hit the spot. And, I will trade snow for sunshine any time.
