La dolce vita, the sweet life, is really about one thing: slowing down enough to notice. That was the guiding idea behind our most recent dinner party with friends. I wanted the evening to feel effortless but intentional, where the focus wasn’t just on the food, but the atmosphere, the connection, and the shared pause in everyone’s busy routines.
Themes help with that. They frame how the evening feels from the moment guests arrive. From the al fresco setting for appetizers, the way the I set the table, and most of all, the menu. Italian wasn’t a premeditated choice. It just landed, and once it did, every course seemed to fall into place naturally. From antipasti to dolci, the flow of dishes almost built themselves, like the night knew what it wanted.

Tasty Bits and Bites
I always enjoy putting together small nibbles when we entertain. This time, I built a tiny grazing board with a mix of salami, tangy Italian giardiniera, savory biscuits and a swipe of classic American yellow mustard. It was colorful, flavorful, and just the right pairing with a glass of wine before dinner. Just a quick little bite to welcome the evening and let conversations begin.

Tomato Vinaigrette and Dill Cream Cheese Dip
Bright, fresh, and bursting with flavor, this Tomato Vinaigrette paired with my creamy dill cream dip was the star of our last dinner party. Served with mini naan bites, it made for a perfect garden-friendly appetizer that is as simple to prepare as it is to enjoy al fresco.

Appetizer
Prosciutto and Melon
I made this appetizer using Piel de Sapo melon. I stumbled upon it while searching for sweet melon varieties in preparation for making my Procuitto and Melon appetizer. What a delicious find! Sweet and juicy with a firm bite, it’s the perfect partner for the salty and briny prosciutto. An effortlessly elegant summer appetizer and a perfect combination that’s as refreshing as it is unexpected.

Main
Tagliatelle alla Bolognese
Getting started takes just minutes...chopping, heating, a splash of olive oil and then this Sauce Bolognese simmers low and slow for a couple of hours, making it the perfect kind of meal to prepare in advance of a casual dinner with friends. This isn’t fast food. It’s slow food, done simply and done well.

Dessert
Honey Roasted Figs, Crème Fraîche and Limoncello
This dessert is a tribute to Italy’s fig season, a fleeting moment that deserves celebration. I roasted ripe black figs drizzled with golden honey and limoncello until they were tender and lush. Then I tied all the flavors together by finishing with a cool dollop of crème fraîche and a small bunch of juicy black grapes for the final finish.
